Minister of Culture, Arts and Leisure Carál Ní Chuilín today published separate strategies on Irish and Ulster-Scots.
They are titled: * Strategy to Enhance and Protect the Development of the Irish Language 2015 – 2035, and * Strategy to Enhance and Develop the Ulster-Scots Language, Heritage and Culture 2015 – 2035
The Minister said: “Irish and Ulster-Scots are key aspects of our culture, heritage and identity.
“The Strategies set out roadmaps for the Irish language and Ulster-Scots language, heritage and culture over the next 20 years in a range of areas such as education, public services, the community and the media.
“The Strategy to Enhance and Protect the Development of the Irish Language promotes the language in a positive, progressive way. It aims to break down barriers and negative preconceptions which have surrounded it. The Strategy aims to open the Irish language up to everyone who chooses to learn and use it.
“It sets out a long-term vision of what needs to be addressed if Irish is to be enhanced, protected and developed as a language for all our community in terms of learning, use, status and respect in a quality and sustainable way.
“The Strategy to Enhance and Develop the Ulster-Scots Language, Heritage and Culture seeks to promote increased awareness about Ulster-Scots and highlight the positive and significant role of Ulster-Scots for all our community.
“It also recognises the tourism potential of the Ulster-Scots language, heritage and culture and seeks to develop and maximise the social and economic benefits of this potential.
“I encourage everyone to take the time to read these documents.”
The Minister added: “In addition to the Strategies, and as I announced in the Assembly, I will be launching a consultation on proposals for an Irish Language Bill in February.”
