Man Arrested For Alleged Theft At Newry Shopping Centre

Police in Newry have made an arrest after a report of theft at a local shopping centre

Newry policing Sergeant Willis said: “Security staff at the centre contacted police to report that they had detained a man they believed had been involved in the theft of multiple items and the assault of a staff member.xa0

“The man (26) was arrested on suspicion of theft, possessing an offensive weapon in a public place and going equipped for theft. He remains in custody at this time.”

Sergeant Willis added: “Thanks to quick-thinking and observant store staff, we were able to ensure that this individual was held accountable.



“For the month of December, ensuring public safety is a priority for the Police Service, as part of our annual Season’s Greetings operation – and that includes those who work in our retail sector.xa0

“We know that the impact ofxa0this type of crimexa0is significant for owners, their staff and the wider community so it’s important we all work together to reducexa0this.

“We continue to urge all business owners, employees and members of the public, to report retail crimexa0to police as soon as possible.

“The sooner reports are made to us, the sooner we can investigate and build a picture or pattern of any offending, and coordinate our resources to tackle the issue.
