CULTURE Minister Carál Ní Chuilín has invited everyone to come to the second Líofa birthday event being held in Guildhall Square, Derry. The party is on Sunday 8 September between 1-4pm.
Tá cuireadh tugtha ag Carál Ní Chuilín, Aire Cultúir, do gach duine chuig dara breithlá Líofa atá le tionól i gCearnóg an Ghildhalla, Doire. Beidh an chóisir ar siúl Dé Domhnaigh 8ú Meán Fómhair idir 1 agus 4in.
Líofa is the campaign launched by the Culture Minister to encourage people to use and become more fluent in Irish. Is é Líofa an feachtas a sheol an tAire Cultúir le daoine a spreagadh chun le héirí níos líofa sa Ghaeilge agus í a úsáid.
Speaking ahead of the event the Minister said: “I am delighted that Líofa’s second birthday is being held here in Derry, the City of Culture. The rich cultural and linguistic heritage on this island is something we all share and can celebrate.
Ag labhairt di roimh an ócáid arsa an tAire: “Tá an-áthas orm go bhfuil dara breithlá Líofa á thionól anseo i nDoire, Cathair an Chultúir. Is rud é an oidhreacht shaibhir chultúrtha agus teanga ar an oileán seo a thig linn uile a roinnt dtig linn uile a bheith páirteach ann agus a cheiliúradh.
“I initially launched Líofa in September 2011 as a means of bringing people together and helping them to either learn or improve their Irish. Essentially what we asked people to do was to make a promise that they would work towards learning or improving their Irish. Over the past two years we have revised the target for the number of sign-ups and we are now way beyond the initial target of 1,000. Well over 4,000 people have made that promise.
“Sheol mé Líofa i dtús báire i Meán Fómhair 2011 mar ghléas dhóigh le daoine a thabhairt i gceann a chéile agus cuidiú leo Gaeilge a fhoghlaim nó a gcuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú. Go bunúsach, is é an rud a d’iarr muid ar dhaoine gealltanas a thabhairt go ndéanfadh siad a ndícheall Gaeilge a fhoghlaim nó a gcuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú. Le dhá bhliain anuas rinne muid an sprioc a bhí againn maidir le líon clárúchán a athbhreithniú agus táimid i bhfad chun tosaigh ar an chéad sprioc, is é sin 1,000 duine. Tá an gealltanas sin tugtha anois ag corradh maith le 4,000 duine.
“I hope as many people as possible come along and join me in celebrating Líofa’s second birthday. The celebrations in Guildhall Square will bring together Irish traditional music, Scots-Gaelic ballads, children’s entertainment and family fun. Also on hand on the day will be many language groups and organisations to offer advice, so if you want to learn or improve your Irish or just want to join in the fun come along to the Guildhall Square in Derry on the 8th September between 1-4pm.
“Tá suil agam go dtiocfaidh a oiread daoine agus is féidir le bheith i mo chuideachta le dara breithlá Líofa a cheiliúradh. Mar chuid den cheiliúradh i gCearnóg an Ghildhalla beidh ceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann, amhráin Gàidhlig, siamsaíocht do pháistí agus spraoi teaghlaigh. Lena chois sin, beidh go leor grúpaí agus eagraíochtaí teanga i láthair le comhairle a thabhairt. Mar sin de, más mian leat Gaeilge a fhoghlaim, do chuid Gaeilge a fheabhsú nó go díreach sult a bhaint as an lá, tar go cearnóg an Ghildhalla i nDoire ar an 8ú Meán Fómhair idir 1-4in.”
