Clean-up works have recently been completed to city centre sections of the Clanrye River in Newry.
With funding assistance from the Department for Communities (DfC), Newry, Mourne and Down District Council worked in partnership with the Department for Infrastructure’s Rivers Agency to carry out a cleaning operation in and on the banks of the city centre stretch of the Clanrye River.
Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick, said: “The overgrown vegetation that was on and over the river-bank walls and bridges has been removed and this was followed up with a spraying programme to prevent any new growth. Objects such as shopping trolleys, tyres and a range of other items were removed from the river channel.
“Handrails have also been installed as part of the project along a number of the raised river-bank areas to assist with future maintenance. The works have made a real difference to the appearance and attractiveness of the Clanrye River as its flows through the city.”
Also funded by DfC was a Public Realm Clean-up scheme, which saw a number of recently installed footpaths across the district receiving a much needed deep clean.
