Jim Shannon MP visits to SERC College in Newtownards
Strangford MP Jim Shannon has visited the South Eastern Regional College in Newtownards and met with Ken Webb, Chief Executive.
Jim Shannon said: “It was brilliant to attend SERC last Friday morning and witness the enthusiasm of all students there.
“Collectively, there are 4,500 full-time students, 8,000 part-time students and over 1,000 staff, who are in direct contact with 5,200 businesses.Â
“If ever there a success story, SERC is certainly one of them and have awarded students over 17,000 qualifications.
“Locally in Newtownards, there has been a 35% increase in uptake on apprenticeships.
“Notably bricklaying, plumbing, plastering, electrical works and caretaking have been popular. Many students state that the apprenticeships and traineeships at SERC have prepared them for real work and life skills.
“It was great to meet and speak one-to-one with some students, who have been improving their critical transferrable skills in order to be successful in future employments.
“I wish these students all the best for their bright futures, and I thank Ken, along with each and every member of staff at SERC campuses for their efforts in giving young people the best opportunities.”
