The Saintfield Development Association (SDA) is delighted with the improvements to the town square following an investment from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Down District Council and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive.

“After weeks of disruption on Main Street for both traders and residents, the lower part of the street has now been resurfaced. Visitors to the village will now have a more pleasant environment to enjoy their shopping experience with a wide variety of welcoming shops to browse.
“It is hoped to make the most of the improvements to the village by again entering the “Ulster in Bloom” competition, building on the helpful feedback from the organisers.
“The SDA is indebted to “Northern Ireland Environment Link” for funding a Heritage Plan and a Landscape Plan for Saintfield and environs through their Challenge Fund. This is funded through the Carrier Bag Levy. Through the Landscape plan, it is hoped to utilise and beautify any neglected tracts of ground and verges around the village.
“The SDA believes that a well researched and realistic Landscape Plan will provide the basis for attracting further funding and focus local efforts over the years, helping to bring about a sustainable commercial future for the Main Street and a vibrant future for residents.”
Mr Gamble added: “Saintfield has a valuable heritage, which includes 18th century wind and watermills, the Battle of Saintfield, a long tradition of markets and fairs of international interest and the traditions and beauty of its hinterland. This unique landscape and heritage deserve nurturing to provide attractions which will bring many more visitors to the town.”
