Sinn Fein South Down MLA’s Catriona Ruane and Westminster candidate Chris Hazzard have welcomed a decision by Roads Service to implement the much-needed traffic calming measures in Hilltown they have been calling for.
Ms Ruane said: “We have been lobbying Roads Service over a period of months, following extensive consultation with local residents, as we feel there is an urgent need for these measures.
“Our work with local residents has included a door-to-door petition to gather support for a safe crossing on the main street across from the Square, to protect the many children and elderly people who cross the busy road at this point.
“I am delighted to say that Roads Service has contacted me to inform me they will be providing 30 MPH roundels as well as a red textured surface in this location in the next few weeks.
“They will also be undertaking a survey for an uncontrolled crossing point in Hilltown, another measure for which myself and Chris have been lobbying. Our sincere thanks to all who signed the petition,” added Ms Ruane.
