South Down MLA Seán Rogers has been appointed by the SDLP as Vice Chair of the Assembly’s Agriculture Committee.
Taking up the role from recently retired Joe Byrne, Mr Rogers said: “I am delighted to be given the opportunity to push forward on the agriculture agenda.
“Farming has always been in my DNA from my earliest years – I continue to be a sheep farmer on a small scale which means I can understand exactly the issues facing our farmers today.
“I have always been and will continue to be a strong advocate for rural affairs and have represented my South Down constituents in health, education, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, jobs and the economy – all keen drivers in our community.
“Our farming and fishing industries are currently under serious financial pressure. I firmly believe we have a great product here but that we need an equitable pricing structure if our agri- food industries if it is to realise its potential.
“I look forward to building on the work of my predecessor Joe Byrne and will be an effective voice for rural issues, representing local people where it matters.”
