South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has welcomed a Fáilte Ireland report she says reinforces her case for a similar reduction on VAT on tourism in the North.
Ms Ritchie has relentlessly lobbied for a reduction on VAT on tourism which she believes would bring enormous benefits for tourism in the North, and has raised the matter with the UK Chancellor at a recent meeting. She said: “I welcome this report because it clearly demonstrates the benefits to the economy in the south of Ireland and shows quite clearly what opportunities are available for tourist establishments and attractions, including hotel accommodation in the north of Ireland,” said Ms Ritchie. “As an MP representing a border constituency where tourism is a principle driver of the local economy, I want to see more people visiting and investing their money in the local area; at attractions and hotels. “To reduce VAT to 9 per cent in the North would bring enormous benefits to the region and I will be making the case for that to happen on my return to Westminster, and again with the Chancellor.”
