Cumann na mBunscoil County Handball Finals at Saval. These players were representing 8 local schools. Before Christmas the County Handball Committee decided to make the promotion of this competition their number one priority. Working closely with Cumann na mBunscoil and the three powerhouses of handball within the county, Downpatrick, Saval and Clonduff, a team set about promoting the event. These structures seemed to have worked a treat, as 41 children turned out, representing fourteen different schools. The action got underway with the Under-11 girls event, this saw 5 participants play a round-robin of singles with the top two meeting in the final. After some really hard fought games, the finalists were decided. Rachel McKeown (mBunscoil Downpatrick) faced off against Kilesha Doyle(mBunscoil Newry), these two young girls showed skill levels way beyond their years. It was nip and tuck right to the end with Rachel pulling of some fantastic shots at crucial times to pull away and close the game out 11-7. Next up was the Under-11 boys event. This section provided several fantastic games, with skill levels remaining high, right through to a great semi final and final. Winning through to the play-off was Ryan Sterritt (Down Primary School) and his RGU teammate Tim Prenter (St Patricks Legammady). The skill and determination shown by both players was of the highest standard, with Tim’s power and precision closing out the game 11-6. TheUnder-11 boys doubles was won by Philip Doran and Niall Laverty from St. Patrick’s PS, Saul Finishing of prceedings was the Under-13 events. The girls singles saw yet another title come to Downpatrick, with Aoife Barnes (Convent of Mercy) coming out on top. The boys event saw Ethan Lennon (Saval) defeat Adran McAvoy (Ballyholland). With the high numbers attending and the level of skill displayed the future of handball in County Down looks to be in safe hands.
