Police in Downpatrick are appealing for information following a robbery and assault that occurred on the morning of Thursday 7 March in the Station Avenue area of Castlewellan.

A man was in the area at approximately 10.35am when another man stabbed him and took a sum of money. The attacker, believed to be approximately 6-feet tall, is believed to have made off in the direction of Station Road. The man has been taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.

Castlewellan SDLP Councillor Eamonn ONeill has spoken out following reports of the stabbing. Councillor  O’Neill said, “I was shocked to hear of this very serious incident which happened earlier this morning in Station Avenue, Castlewellan.

“Local people are appalled that such crimes occurred within the close knit community of Castlewellan. I would urge members of the public, who may have any information relating to this incident, to contact the local Police, as the perpetrators of these heinous crimes must be apprehended and put before the courts.”
