South Down MLA Colin McGrath welcomes progress on the Aughnislafin bus shelter
The SDLP’s Colin McGrath MLA has welcomed confirmation from Newry Mourne and Down Council that they will explore the possibility of solar lighting at the bus shelter at Aughlisnafin.
Commenting, the South Down MLA said: “There have been a number of issues presenting here that need to be addressed. I have been working closely with the Council and with the local team at DfI Roads to address them.
“One issue which remains ongoing is that of the speed of traffic along this road and the adjoining Aughlisnafin Road.
“We are seeing traffic moving at incredibly high speeds and I have requested that DFI Roads meet with me on site to witness this first hand, and to see how this impacts on school drop offs.
“The other issue is that of lighting at the bus shelter. The lack of lighting here has become an issue for the children who are waiting here for school buses, and for local residents that make use of the bus stop.
“Last year we had great success in lobbying the Council to install solar lighting units at bus shelters in Atticall, and I have proposed to them that they consider this given the rural nature of this bus shelter.
“I am delighted to hear that they are now exploring the possibility of doing this.”
Mr McGrath added: “Any added light at local bus stops can only be a good thing, and if we can do that through renewable solar energy then it’s a win-win for everyone.
“I am delighted to support the local community in hopefully seeing this delivered.”
