Love In The Air For Birds At Ring of Gullion

Valentine’s Day marks the start of National Nest Box Week and the Ring of Gullion team is marking it with an invitation to show a little love for our local birds. It’s the time we remind ourselves to give courting birds a warm, secure home for raising the next generation!

Making birdboxes is fun.

Join the team on Saturday, 9 February at 2.00pm-4.00pm for a nest box building workshop as part of National Nest Box Week. The workshop will take place in the Pastoral Centre, Jonesborough and attendees will get a chance to make their very own nest box to bring home and use, in the hopes of encouraging more birds in their garden.

Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairman, Councillor Mark Murnin said, “We are looking forward to help the local community make their own nest boxes and provide information on what birds to look out for in the garden.”

He added, “National Nest Box Week takes places from 14-21 February 2019 and it is a chance for everyone to encourage birds in their garden to come home to roost. The idea behind the week is to get us all to put up nest boxes in our local areas, not only to protect the wildlife we already have, but to encourage even more birds to brood in our backyards.”

Natural nest sites for birds such as holes in trees or old buildings are disappearing fast as gardens are ‘tidied’ and old houses are repaired. Taking part in National Nest Box Week gives participants the chance to contribute to bird conservation and observe any breeding birds that are attracted to the nest box.
