South Down MLA Chris Hazzard (Sinn Féin) has this week given his support to the ‘Keep Us Well’ campaign that is making the case for free prescriptions as an essential investment for people with long-term conditions.
He said: “I have received a lot of letters and emails from constituents in relation to the ‘Keep Us Well campaign’.
“A large number of people across South Down live with one or more long-term conditions and having recently met with a number of local Multiple Sclerosis sufferers, I want to add my support to the call that those with long term conditions should be exempt from having to pay any form of prescription charge.
“Paying for treatment will place an unfair burden on the sick and disabled. Seeking to reinstate prescription charges when there is already money available through the Pharmaceutical Price Regulation scheme is not the way to do business.
“Sinn Féin’s policy on this is very clear – we believe Health Care should be free at the point of delivery and we will continue to make this point to the minister.”
