Hazzard Calls For North’s Remain Vote To Be Respected at Féte de l’Humanite.
Sinn Féin’s Chris Hazzard MP has called on the British government to acknowledge and respect the democratic decision of the people of the North of Ireland to remain within the European Union.
Speaking at the Féte de l’Humanite festival in Paris – the world’s biggest political gathering – the South Down MP commented: “Brexit poses an incalculable threat to the island of Ireland.
“Every imaginable section of our society will be adversely affected by the decision of Britain to leave the European Union.
“The peace and political processes in the North of Ireland, built on the foundations of the Good Friday Agreement, have been, and will continue to be, seriously challenged by Brexit.
“Sinn Féin has consistently argued the rights of all citizens in the North must not be undermined or diluted at all.
“Our all-Ireland economy, agri-food sector and energy markets must remain without aberration, as must the free movement of people, goods and services on the island of Ireland.
“In short the Good Friday Agreement must be maintained and the North’s democratic expression must be respected.”
