A free alcohol and drugs awareness course for sports’ coaches is to be held in Newtownards on Monday 9 December.
The short course, organised by Ards Borough Council, will provide an introduction to alcohol and drug related issues, highlighting the role that sports coaches can play in helping to change drug taking behaviour.
Emma Hingston, Sports Development Officer with Ards Borough Council, is encouraging coaches and sports performers, to attend. She said: “Sports coaches are often trusted mentors who can have a significant influence on those they train, therefore it is important that coaches are equipped to address drug and alcohol related issues.
“The upcoming course will explore how people can change drug taking behaviour and how sports coaches can assist with this, focusing on her signs and symptoms of drug or alcohol abuse, how coaches can approach those who may have a problem, and how to support and signpost those struggling to the correct information. I highly recommend it to those involved in teaching sport.”
The course will be led by Ed Sipler, who is an experienced health development specialist with the South Eastern Health Trust, who specialises in Alcohol and Drug misuse.
The Drugs and Alcohol Awareness workshop takes place on Monday 9 December 2013 at Ards Leisure Centre from 7pm to 9pm and is free of charge. To secure your place on this course registration is essential.
