Dermot Nesbitt from Crossgar, County Down is in conversation with Chris Scott, host of the Down about Down Podcast.

Dermot was raised in Crossgar and has spent most of his life there. He became one of the most well-known Northern Ireland politicians and was an Ulster Unionist MLA for South Down (1998-2007).

Background to Down about Down Podcast

From Broadcaster to Podcaster – Former local radio presenter, Chris Scott, turns his hand to podcasting. 

Former presenter with Downpatrick’s FM105 Down Community Radio has moved on from his weekly programme and is now creating podcasts featuring interviews with people across County Down.

Chris is no stranger to talking to people and is adept at bringing out interesting stories from individuals across all echelons of society.  

Over the past two years Chris has interviewed local singers, songwriters, poets, artists, business owners and community organisations to name but a few.

He has also chatted to a plethora of world-renowned personalities from the music world including Marcia Barrett (Boney M), Graham Fenton (Matchbox), Chris Amoo (The Real Thing), Freda Payne, Judy Collins, Romeo Challenger (Showaddywaddy), Loreena McKennitt and Andy Kyriacou (Modern Romance).  

Chris has been chatting to people and recording their stories from the age of 14. “As a teenager, who grew up in County Antrim.

He said: “I loved to spend time talking to the older generation and write down their stories. They had some interesting tales to tell.”

Chris, a former columnist, had over 150 local history articles published in The Ulster Star and Lisburn.com between 2006 and 2012.

It was not unusual for him to be giving a talk about aspects of local history to church and community groups or to be leading a walking tour around areas of his hometown in Lisburn. 

In this new podcast, “Down about Down” Chris will be talking to people across County Down who have stories to tell.

Chris added: “Everyone has a story to tell and there is nothing better than listening to someone relating it in their own words.

“I am particularly interested in any of the older folks who have stories to tell. It is always interesting to learn about life here many years ago. I would encourage anyone to get in touch with me for a chat.” 

“I think podcasting is an excellent medium for this. Unlike radio, the podcast is available to the listener when they choose to listen.”  

Chris had been making the interviews, extracted from weekly community radio programme, available over the past number of years across various audio streaming and distribution platforms and has attracted over 4200 downloads.
