Newcastle Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke speaking after meeting with Council officials to discuss infrastructure improvements at the Council owned Bogie Hill, Newcastle, said: “This is a very popular access onto King street and is extremely well used by walkers using the Granite trail.
“Many aspects of the Bogie Hill pathway are in need of improvement… steps have deteriorated badly and need to be replaced with material’s that are in keeping with the rich quarrying heritage of the area.
“The Granite Trail is a great walking route that gives a snapshot of the areas rich cultural history, this was a local community project which delivers sustainable tourism to an area which receives very little funding.”
Cllr Clarke added: “Tourism, recreation and leisure pursuits are expanding businesses which Iideveloped could ensure Newcastle Harbour becomes a hub of activity – the rich natural and cultural heritage of the area means it is a prime location for many activities.
“The trail needs to be expanded to incorporate the Bogie Hill which would enhance the experience. Council officers have been tasked to cost an environmental improvement scheme and ensure it is carried out as quickly as possible.”
