Newcastle Leisure Centre progress welcomed by Cllr Willie Clarke
Mournes Sinn Féin Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed Council confirmation that painting of the facade of Newcastle Leisure Centre, will take place following the demolition of the rear of the building.
Councillor Clarke said: “I have been lobbying Newry Mourne And Down District Council for over a year to repaint the facade of the Newcastle centre which is a Listed Building.
“It is essential that the up-keep of this historic building is maintained to a high standard. while the metal structure has been removed.
“This is part of the new centre to incorporate a swimming facility thus meeting the leisure needs of the local community.
“Every effort must be made to preserve the Listed Building which is a frontline service including the Tourism Information Centre.
“The façade has deteriorated badly with large areas of exposed plaster.”
Cllr Clarke added: “Contractors are to be appointed to carry out repairs and redecorate the external fabric of the Newcastle Centre, to include walls, doors, windows and ironmongery.
“Instead, of erecting scaffolding, contractors will use mobile working platforms by switching methods. This will save Council approximately £7,000 on this contract overall.”
