SDLP South Down MLA Sinead Bradley has said that it is a sorry state of affairs when an MP from another jurisdiction has to speak up for the people of Northern Ireland, whilst the DUP continue to operate with their hands covering their ears.
Speaking after the SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford MP stated that the Tory party had ‘ripped up the Good Friday Agreement’ by reneging on the Backstop, Ms Bradley added that DUP attempts to feign outrage at such a remark will not fool the majority of people here who voted to remain.
The MLA for South Down said: “While Nigel Dodds claims his party is not advocating for a hard border on the island of Ireland, his party’s voting record could result in one nonetheless.
“The SDLP have been on record time and time again, stating the fact that whilst it might not fit the politics of some, without a legally operative Backstop, there will be a hard border on the island of Ireland.
“Last night the DUP ignored the voices of people here once again. So much so, it took an SNP MP to remind those on the benches of Westminster of the reality of their decision.
“It is equally as frustrating that Sinn Féin, who have no difficulty turning up for media interviews, refused to use their mandate where and when it counted.”
