Councillor William Walker, Chairman of the Bonfire Liaison Committee said, “This competition has gone from strength to strength over the last few years and provides our young people with an opportunity to showcase their artistic talents whilst highlighting a very important message. July bonfire celebrations are great fun, but it is vital that we educate our young people about how to enjoy these festivities safely. We need to do all we can to reduce the levels of risk associated with bonfires, reduce anti-social behaviour and keep our communities safer.” The Bonfire Safety Competition is open to young people living or attending schools and colleges in Down District. Pupils are asked to design an A4 poster on the theme of bonfire safety either by hand or by using a computer. The judging panel will consider both the design elements and messages in each submission, and six lucky winners will each receive a £50 voucher and have their artwork included in the 2012 Community Safety Calendar. Entry forms are available from the Community Safety page at www.downdc.gov.uk or by contacting Stephanie Kelly on 028 4461 0800, email stephanie.kelly@downdc.gov.uk. Entries should be forwarded to the Community Safety Partnership, Down District Council, 24 Strangford Road, Downpatrick BT30 6SR by 4.00pm on Friday 17 June 2011.]]>
