The Seniors made it two wins in a row after seeing off the challenge of a spirited St Michael’s side in Annsborough on Friday evening.
Both teams will meet again in the preliminary round of the Junior Championship on Sunday 17 August but this match will have no real bearing on who would be favourites to progress. First half goals from Breannain McComiskey and Ciaran Rice put the ‘Fin in the driving seat at half time. McComiskey, Sean Willoughby and Sean Fitzsimmons getting the points to give the Fin a 2-3 to 0-5 interval lead. In the second half the ‘Fin outscored the visitors 1-8 to 0-3 to win by 12 points in the end. The final score maybe not accurately reflecting the game. Rice got a second major and tagged on four points in a superb display of score taking. The other points coming from Willoughby, James Brannigan, Patrick Flanagan and second half substitute Alvin Lynch. Final score Aughlisnafin 3-11 St Michael’s 0-8. Next up is Bright in Annsborough this Friday at 7.30 pm. The U16’s also won their second game on the trot after a superb two point win over a strong Ardglass side. Despite losing by several points at half time the ‘Fin edged a high octane second half affair to seal the win. Darren Toner (0-1) was assured in nets with impeccable handling and positional kick outs in the first half before been switched outfield with Faelan Murphy going between the posts. A tenacious full back line of Callum Haynes, Ruari Toner and Murphy/Toner made the seasiders work hard for their scores.
In midfield Sean Flanagan (0-1) and Eoin Lundy (2-3) held their own against a physically bigger Ardglass midfield pairing with Lundy giving a masterclass in high fielding. Up front Oran Flanagan (3-5), Richard Byrne (1-0) and Jack Matthews (2-0) gave the Ardglass defence a torrid afternoon. Michael Smyth, Jamie Walsh and Ben King all entered the fray in the second half and all three made contributions at crucial times to help close out the win. King was unlucky not to grab a goal with the Ardglass keeping saving well and Smyth winning a kickout to tee up Flanagan for what was the winning goal. Final score Aughlisnafin 8-10 Ardglass 6-14. Next game is away to Carryduff B on Thursday 19th June. The U14’s were at home to Drumaness last Monday and put in a superb first half performance to lead by half time. As a result of a serious injury suffered by one of the Drumaness players on the stroke of half time the match official, after consultation with the mentors of both clubs, took the right and proper decision to abandon the game. The match was re-fixed for a later date but was subsequently forfeited by the St Colman’s club. We wish the injured player a speedy recovery. Next game for the U14’s will be this Wednesday away to Darragh Cross at 7.30 pm followed by a game at home on Monday 16th June against Carryduff. The U12’s put in an impressive performance away to Darragh Cross on Sunday to win comfortably. The scorers for the ‘Fin were Ethan Lyttle 4-5, Conor Donnelly 4-0, Conall King 3-1, Conor Matthews 2-5, Morgan Croskery 2-4, Jack keenan 2-0, Rhys Clarke 1-4, Peter O’Hare 1-0 and Dylan McKibben 0-1. Also featuring were Aaran Flanagan in nets, Marc Quinn, Michael Flanagan and Rory Walsh in defence and James McCabe in attack. Dara Burns, Owen O’Neill, Odhran Maguire, Niamh King all coming on in the second half. Next match is at home to Drumaness this Sunday at 11 am. Well done to U12’s players Morgan and Conall who were part of the St Mary’s Aughlisnafin team who defeated St Joseph’s Carnacaville in the semi final of the Allianz Cuman na Bunscol football competition on Thursday. Comiserations to the club’s U12’s players Ethan, Rory, Peter, Dylan and Gerard who lined out for St Joseph’s. Both schools joined forces for the Canon Esler Shield final back in the Autumn and this was the first time they went head to head this season. St Mary’s will play St Malachy’s Kilcoo in the final this Saturday, time and venue to be confirmed. As a result of the Schools final the Club may not be able to participate in the Clonduff U12’s tournament. Keep an eye on our club Facebook page. An understrength Aughlisnafin Ladies team suffered a narrow 1-8 to 0-6 defeat away to Teconnaught Ladies. Teconnaught led 1-5 to 0-4 at half time but despite their best efforts they could not claw back the deficit in a low scoring second half. Next match is at home to Saul on Saturday 21st June. The club are hosting the Year 6 Go Games Blitz this Saturday in Annsborough at 10.30 am. Visiting teams from Bryansford, Dundrum and Teconnaught. All teams to be at the pitch for 10 am.
