The County Down community choir Voices of Lecale is gearing up for their busiest time of year and their Christmas 2019 programme starts with their ‘Welcome, Yule!‘ concert at Down Arts Centre on Sunday 2 December at 3pm.
The choir’s Musical Director Laura Plummer said: “We all love mixing the traditional with some less well known carols and songs…Â in the same way a chef will try to vary the menu a bit at this time of year. S
“So along with tried and tested favourites like ‘O Holy Night’ and ‘White Christmas’ we’ll have ‘Noel Nouvelet’, a 15th century carol from France, ‘Still, still, still’, a gorgeous 19th century carol from Austria and a couple of great songs from folk icon Kate Rusby, including ‘Yorkshire Merry Christmas’. There’s even a John Lennon number in the programme (no prizes for guessing!) We encourage the audience to join in the chorus of some of the songs – there’s nothing like singing to put you in the mood for Christmas.’
As always the concert is in aid of charity. The choir’s Chairperson Elizabeth Smyth said she is delighted the choir is helping a local charity this year and added:Â “Our chosen charity for 2018 Â is Glebe House (Harmony Community Trust) based in Kilclief which does a lot of worthwhile cross-community work with young people and also helps combat isolation felt by many older people in our community.
“Since the choir was formed in 2007 all our profits have been donated to a range of worthwhile charities and the total now stands at £29,000. I’d like to say how proud I am as incoming Chairperson that our choir has been able to so many good causes while we continue to have fun singing. This year we have been very conscious about trying to make the tickets as affordable as possible. We hope that people in the mid-Down area will come along to enjoy the singing and help us to help Glebe House this Christmas.”
Tickets for the concert are now on sale at Down Arts Centre at £8 (£6 concession).
Voices of Lecale community choir is a registered charity founded in 2007 and has recorded four CD albums of songs in addition to performances at concerts, festivals and community venues throughout the County Down and Belfast area.
