The Power of conversation and technology : a blog by Dan Gebski and Inga McQuaid.
The Power of conversation and technology during present turbulent times by Dan Gebski and Inga McQuaid.
“Any sufficiently advanced technology is equivalent to magic, but there is nothing more powerful than conversation” – Dan Gebski
Where would we all be without technology? Especially our phones! As much as they are a hindrance, addictive and sometimes wishing we could escape from them, they are an excellent way we can connect with the world within seconds.
Being away from my home, it can be hard when sometimes I would just love to drive to see my parents or go for a drink with my sister and friends in Poland, but with Facebook messenger, Whatsapp, Zoom etc I can speak to them anytime I like and send them photos and videos daily. It’s an excellent way for my children to speak to their family just at the touch of a button!
All these apps keep my family that bit closer and for that I am grateful. It’s like everything in the life for every pro there is a con, but it’s all about balance.
According to my friend Inga McQuiad, people need to talk and this is what she thinks about all of this.
She said: “In my opinion talking is as valuable to us as breathing. I know I can not go one day without talking to my relatives and people I am close to.
“It is most important now, during this strange and unfamiliar time during the lockdown.
“Conversations with loved ones and friends release the happy hormones and all of a sudden you feel good, you have a laugh, a memory of the fun times or perhaps sad times and you feel connected , you feel that you belong.
“I often think about people that live on their own and have nobody to talk to. That must be very hard. As I know every “Good morning ” or ” do you want a cup of tea ?” are so very important to me. Maybe I’m afraid of loneliness. I know some people that prefer to be alone . This is certainly not me.
“We live in the era of technology and thanks to that we can video call anybody in any country free of charge and not only hear but also see them.
“I have a morning routine with my family in Latvia where we call each other, have a lovely conversation and have a morning coffee together. Then we all go on with our daily routines. Even though I miss
my family back home these conversations help me a lot. We have a right laugh and a giggle. We share our troubles with each other and life is much easier.

“Talk” : a poem by Inga McQuaid.
Just talk ! I beg you, please
Let’s talk about our memories
About the funny, little things .
About you childhood, biggest dreams!
Just talk! Don’t stay so closed, so still!
The conversation helps, it will
Support and comfort, aid, uplift
Your sorry mood will ease and lift.
It can be small talk or so deep
That makes you cry and makes you weep.
But you will fifind that after that
You are so light and strong inside !
Just talk ! Just open up and speak !
With people that are close, unique.
You know, I promise, you’ll be fine
Just tell your worries and then smile.
