Donaghadee Sisters Win Tallest Sunflower Competition
The Ards and North Down in Bloom Tallest Sunflower competition winners have been announced with Donaghadee sisters Lola and Grace Monteith, claiming the overall award after nurturing their sunflower which grew to a height of an amazing 3.81 metres.
Bangor’s Xyla Drew claimed second place with a mighty 3.2m sunflower, closely followed by Jessica MacDonald, also from Bangor, who was proud of her blooming tall sunflower that reached 3.14m.
Earlier this year, Ards and North Down Borough Council distributed 6,000 packets of free sunflower seeds to schools across the Borough to get children growing as part of the Ards and North Down in Bloom community competitions initiative.
Congratulating the winners, the Deputy Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Robert Adair, said:
“The competition really caught the imagination of our young people and it is wonderful to see so many children take an interest in growing plants and flowers.
“Congratulations to the winners and everyone who took part in the competition. Their combined efforts have helped to make our Borough even more beautiful!”
The Ards and North Down in Bloom community competition encourages everyone in the Borough to think about their local environment and how flowers, plants and gardens can enhance it for people while also protecting wildlife.
The initiative also features Volunteer of the Year categories as well as a Painting Competition and Best School Garden Project.
The winners of these categories will be announced before the end of the month.
