Over the past six weeks, the students, under the direction of the Head Girl team at St Mary’s High School in Downpatrick, have been filling shoe boxes in time for Christmas.
The boxes will be sent to Eastern Europe and will give much joy to over 100 children. The boxes were filled with practical items such as clothes, writing materials, toothbrushes as well as sweets and toys. John Young of Team Hope said: “We hope the boxes bring much joy to children who are in great need and we want to thank all students, their families and staff for their support with this activity.”
The boxes were collected on Friday morning from the school by representatives of Team Hope, a local charity who organise the delivery of the boxes to the needy children before the festive season.
Mr Young added: “We’d like to thank the students for their huge generosity. We have been collecting shoeboxes from around Ireland for the past fifteen years and now we are developing in Northern Ireland. I have personally collected 1000 boxes this week alone. The response has been fantastic.”
