A Q&A session with Roy and Noel Spence from Comber hosted by broadcaster Joe Lindsay
County Down filmmakers fifty year career is showcased at Belfast Film Festival.
Comber filmmakers and twin brothers Roy and Noel Spence exhibited a history of their work on Saturday 6 November.
The Belfast Film Festival event, Spence Brothers: The Men and their Movies, took place at the Strand Arts Centre from 10am–1pm.
A showreel of Spence Brothers, and related films was shown throughout the morning including screenings of ‘Tormented’ and ‘Keep Watching Skies’.
The Spence Brothers received the Belfast Film Festival ‘Outstanding contribution to cinema in Northern Ireland’ award as an acknowledgement of their extensive career, spanning over fifty years.
A Q&A session hosted by Broadcaster Joe Lindsay closed the event. The session covered the highs and lows of the filmmakers’ careers, discussing some of their most notable films.
Head of Programming of Belfast Film Festival, Stephen Hackett said: “America has the Coen Brothers, Belgium has the Dardenne Brothers, but Northern Ireland has the Spence Brothers!”
“These film mavericks have been making incredible, sometimes eccentric, films across many genres from sci-fi, horror to folk-life documentaries for years. They’ve also been an incredible support to other young filmmakers across Northern Ireland, providing advice and skills training in special effects and techniques.
“We honour them, their work and their vision.”
The Spence Brothers: The Men and their Movies is curated by Strand Arts Centre in partnership with Belfast Film Festival and Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive (funded by the Department of Communities) and Strand Stories (funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund).
