Mourne’s Sinn Féin Cllr Willie Clarke has welcomed installation of a pedestrian traffic Island, on the Catlewellan Road Newcastle at the Burren Meadow junction.
Cllr Clarke said: “Residents living along the Castlewellan Road, Newcastle have been asking for a pedestrian crossing for years and Sinn Féin, along with County Down Rural Community Network health officer, Paula Nixon, local Resident Groups and Cllr Laura Devlin, have all carried on a consistent lobby to have the works included on the Transport Ni schedule.”
“The Burren Meadow estate has a lot of young children navigating this very busy stretch of Road and the growing traffic volumes had caused a lot of worry for parents concerned about their children crossing at this junction”.
Cllr Clarke added: “While I welcome the installation of the crossing and the remarking of the road markings at the Zebra crossing, the continuation of the campaign for Pedestrian Controlled crossings on the Castlewellan Road and Dundrum Road in Newcastle will intensify with a petition which will be collected by community and political groups in the Autumn.”
