Due to the high traffic volumes the work is to be carried out during off peak hours. She said: “The decision to carry out work during these hours simply made sense.

“NIWater are planning to carryout a sewerage connection from a new housing and business development on St. Patrick’s Avenue and Sinn Féin has lobbied the agency to ensure that work was completed in a timely and sensitive fashion.

“This scheme will begin in the coming weeks, with work scheduled for completion before the Transportni Christmas embargo commences in late November.

“I have worked with both NIWater and Transportni over the last number of months to finalise the detail of this scheme and to ensure that in delivering it, agencies are sensitive to the traffic flow through Downpatrick.

“What I did not want happening was another occasion whereby traders in the town would suffer at the hands of daytime traffic diversions and congestion caused by on-going works.

“I am delighted that Transportni and NIWater will deliver this scheme taking into account the needs of local business and motorists. I believe a diversion will be in place during the works and removed each morning at 6.00am as not to hinder traffic.

“Severe traffic congestion is hindering the economic development of Downpatrick and the wider district. I congratulate Transportni and NIWater for their forward thinking on this occasion and I’m hopeful that this model can be replicated in times ahead to ensure maximum value for everyone,”  added Cllr Bailie.
