Sinn Féin Down District Councillor Willie Clarke has welcomed the enhancement of the Council’s recycling by providing 1180 additional homes in rural areas of Down District with a brown bin.

Welcoming the initiative, councillor Willie Clarke said: “This is a welcome development and one which will compliment the bin collection service already in place. It also demonstrates the commitment of Down District Council to continue to-play our part in recycling and helping to offset our carbon footprint locally. I would like to thank the officers for their efforts for identifying the funding which has enabled the extension of the brown bin collection.
“The Brown Bin takes biodegradable household waste such as foodstuffs, compost and grass. The scheme has been in operation in urban areas of Down for many years now and has been a success story. So we as a council have decided to roll out the scheme into a number of rural areas of the district so that people in these areas can avail of the service also.
“I have been informed by Joe Parkes, Assistant Director of Environmental Services at the Council that the scheme will be brought forward due to the amount of food waste that is disposed off at Christmas. Because of this factor, Council want to maximise the diversion of tonnage from landfill.
“All the households receiving this service will also receive literature on what can go into the brown bin and a calendar on when to put the bin out. The collection service will start next week on the day stated in their calendar,” added Cllr Willie Clarke.
