On Saturday 2 May, Shimna Wheelers launched ‘Sprocket Rockets’, their new youth cycling programme.
The Sprocket Rocket programme was initially launched by Cycling Ireland in 2010, and it is a cycling skills programme aimed at teaching young riders the fundamental skills involved in cycling. It is run as an 9-week programme, with each session taking one hour.
Sprocket Rocket was developed for young children, with an aim of increasing the competence and confidence of young riders. To date over 5000 children have benefited from Sprocket Rocket, which is run in a variety of locations and formats, from schools or clubs, to summer camps and taster sessions. Sprocket Rocket has a strong emphasis on fun and constant coaching.

With the help of our trained volunteers, kids were introduced to the safety aspects of cycling including proper clothing, head wear and the ‘M’ Check (a system for checking over your bike is safe and ready to ride).
“Following on, the Sprocket Rockets were introduced to the skills course. Once divided into groups, they all were given the opportunity to test their skills of cornering, braking, balance and pedalling. The final element involved the completion of the entire circuit with the introduction to the limbo challenge. Everyone totally enjoyed the experience and we look forward to introducing new challenges as the weeks progress.
“This is an amazing and exciting time for Shimna Wheelers, we are really establishing a strong base upon which to build a bigger, better and stronger club as the years progress.”
