Cllr Gareth Sharvin calls for street lighting improvements in Raholp and Strangford
SDLP Councillor Gareth Sharvin has written to the Department for Infrastructure to calls for street lighting fixtures across Raholp and Strangford to be repaired without delay.
The Downpatrick Councillor said: “I am concerned about the level of queries which I have been receiving regarding street lighting outages across Raholp and Strangford.
“All of the reports I have received have been reported through to the Department for Infrastructure’s local office with a request to have these repaired without delay.
“We need to be aware of the fact that as a rural area, we have a real need for our access to street lighting.
“Without such access there is an increasing issue of road safety for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Therefore I do hope the Department will act upon this quickly.”
Tourists should not be left in the dark says Sharvin
Cllr Sharvin also added: “Another impact of this street lights’ issue is that we will soon be entering a period when we will have many tourists making their way to these rural areas from March onwards.
“Therefore it is essential that our local infrastructure is up to the standard that we need it to be.
“If there are any street lighting systems in the area that continue to use an outdated system, I would ask the Department of Infrastructure to give consideration to an upgrade to the new LED system.
