Strangford MP Jim Shannon speaking prior to his trip to Iraq to meet with some Christian Churches said: “Iraq was a country where there were once over 1 Million Christians, but now there are only 225 000 which is a 75% reduction in numbers.
“This country once enjoyed an aspect of freedom for religion and there is now an atmosphere of fear that is reinforced by a regime that lets the Muslim religion take first place and prevents conversion from Islam to Christianity.
“As Chair of the APPG for Religious Belief at Westminster, I am keen to encourage Christian Brothers and Sisters in Iraq and hope to enter talks and discussions with the Iraqi Government to facilitate an easement of the right to believe and express yourself in a society where religious freedoms can and indeed must happen.
“The agenda for the visit is intensive and next week I will report on that visit and steps to secure freedom of religion and in particular for those of a Christian denomination.
“Obviously there is a need for a change in attitude. The advancement of ISIS and the decimation of the Church is a worrying trend and it is my hope that visits like this and entering into talks could make a difference to the lives of the people who are living daily in fear.
“Aid to the Church in Need does wonderful charitable work in Iraq and helps all who have needs giving millions of Euros for housing and health needs and addressing depression, minor illnesses and mental health issues.
“It is my hope that my return will bring good news of help and encouragement for the Church and people in need in Iraq.”
