Jim Shannon MP has asked for a road surface check to be done at the Portaferry Road, Newtownards
Jim Shannon, MP for Strangford, has asked Road Service to initiate a review of the road surface at Portaferry Road, Newtownards.
The Strangford MP said: “Yet again another accident has taken place at the same spot where another one took place three weeks ago.
“And it is the same spot where a bus went onto its roof on the shore and at least another six vehicles have also gone off the road at this point.
“Only by the grace of God no one has been killed at this location. Too many accidents on a 30–50-yard stretch of the road must raise alarm bells and highlight that improvements must be made in some way.
“I spoke with a lady who helped on the scene who told me that speed was not a consideration and that, had the tide been in, the outcome would have been completely different. It is clear that action must be taken urgently.
“I am asking for a meeting with the District Manager of Road Service and the PSNI at this location.
“The question must be asked: is there something wrong with the road surface which causes these accidents after a dry spell when an accident occurs when it rains… why?
“Road Service needs to carry out an examination of the road surface and there is an urgent need for a crash barrier. Damage to vehicles, injuries and worse can and must be prevented as soon as possible.”
