Strangford MP Jim Shannon MP speaking after a meeting with Andrea Leadsom MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, said: “I had requested and received the meeting to discuss the use of information for the agri-food and fisheries sectors which are both crucial to my constituency of Strangford.
“Between them there are over 3000 jobs directly, and more indirectly fishermen supply to the agri-food companies of Pritchitt Foods, Willowbrook Foods, Mash Direct and Rich Sauces. I have met all of the companies and they need a confirmation that business across the border to the ROI can continue without any prevention – some of these companies have 35-40% trade with the ROI.
“The Minister confirmed that the UK Government is totally committed to ensuring that business continues and that a smooth transition ensues. The position of workers was also highlighted and again the Minister stated that the UK Government mean to enable workers to stay and work here and that they are an integral part of that process.
“The Fishing sector is vital to the NI economy and the Minister sees a close working relationship with the ROI and a sustainable industry creating more jobs and long term employment.
“Government are very aware of what is needed for NI and Minister Andrea Leadsom has clearly stated that it will be her intention to make sure that it happens. She will be coming to NI for a visit and again I extended an invitation to visit companies in Strangford and in particular the key agri-food sector.”
