SDLP has met with residents in Marguerite Park in Newcastle regarding traffic issues. South Down MLA Rogers said: “Before the summer I made representations to the DRD Roads Service regarding the volume of traffic through Marguerite each morning and afternoon. Hundreds of cars are passing through this residential development to drop children to primaey school and to pick them up. “When the school returned from holidays, I set about arranging a site visit for a number of local residents to discuss the difficulties they have and their very genuine road safety concerns.
Speaking after the meeting with residents Mr Rogers said”“I am pleased that a Senior Roads Official came out on site and listened to the concerns of local residents. As a result Marguerite is due to be assessed with a view to some form of Traffic Calming. However, if the area passes the needs test, consultation will take place with the local community before any action is taken and I welcome this.” Cllr Laura Devlin also added; “It was clear when standing within the development that at certain times the traffic is intense. I do wish to point out that Roads Service did pay tribute to the school by way of their internal arrangements for picking up and dropping off – it was actually described as ‘Text book’, however, my concerns, and that of the residents, are for the safety of children outside of the school gates – walking to school, parents driving and also to local residents who really struggle to even get in and out of their homes at certain times of the day. “I look forward to the outcome of the traffic assessment.”
