South Down MLA Seán Rogers (SDLP) has supported the CO Awareness Charities 9th Carbon Monoxide awareness week which is due to start on Monday 17 November.
Mr Rogers said: “The dangers of carbon monoxide are often misunderstood. There is a real need for society in general to develop a better awareness of this lethal gas that can kill in less than three minutes. It has been reported that carbon monoxide remains the biggest cause of accidental death by poisoning in the UK.
“Our homes, workplaces, boats, caravans, tents are amongst the many potential places where this deadly gas can accumulate.
“I would therefore encourage everyone to take a moment and consider some of the preventative measures listed by CO Awareness that could reduce the likelihood of danger from this lethal gas”.
Prevention: * all fuel burning appliances and associated flues/chimneys are installed by the appropriate, registered trades people. * the above are maintained and serviced in accordance with the manufacturers instructions * no-one modifies or tampers with any appliance, flue or chimney * your chimney is swept and inspected regularly * ventilation openings are not blocked and are free from vegetations * fit an audible CO alarm, certified to EN 50291 * the CO alarm is tested when your appliances are.
Remember: All appliances should be correctly installed and maintained. A CO alarm is not a substitute!
Mr Rogers congratulated the charity on their very helpful and informative website which provides easily accessible information to those who wish to run an awareness campaign during CO Awareness week in schools or workplaces.
