South Down SDLP MLA Seán Rogers has called on Newry, Mourne and Down Council to improve the access to the overflow car park off Donard Park, Newcastle. Mr Rogers said:” This overflow park is vital to Newcastle particularly from Easter to September, when the numbers visiting the town increases ten-fold. However there have been issues with the Parking arrangements and in particular the narrow access route. Last week I met with Marie Ward, the new Director for Enterprise, Regeneration and Tourism and I flagged this up. “I appreciate that the slip road from Donard Park into the overflow is unadopted but something needs to be done. I believe the Council has a duty of care to those entering and exiting this carpark. “Residents living in the Donard Fold have reported issues when cars are exiting from the overflow onto the slip road – these cars believe they have right of way, which is causing major issues for the elderly residents who drive or walk to and from their homes. “I have asked the Council to consider some form of signage, road markings or traffic calming at this location, as well as asking the PSNI to monitor traffic speeds at this point.”
