South Down MP Margaret Ritchie (SDLP) has described EU membership as “crucial” to the Northern Ireland economy and future job creation.
Following a question to the Secretary for the Exchequer, Damien Hinds MP, Ms Ritchie said:
“Northern Ireland has benefited immensely from membership of the EU: politically, socially and economically. EU membership is crucial to the future strength and growth of the Northern Ireland economy.
“50,000 jobs in the North are linked to trade with the EU. Those are 50, 000 people whose jobs could be threatened by an exit with all of the personal and social implications that will entail.
“The entire UK would suffer as a result of leaving the EU but we in Northern Ireland would find ourselves in a particularly volatile and uncertain situation due to our border with the South. A vote to remain on 23rd June is critical for Northern Ireland’s economy.”
