South Down MP Margaret Ritchie (SDLP) has condemned those behind an attack on a church in Kilkeel in which crosses and statues were damaged.
Ms Ritchie urged anyone with information about the attack to contact police.
She said: “I join with the community in South Down in condemning this attack on this place of worship.
“No place of worship should be subject to vandalism and acts of disrespect.
“I know the community in Kilkeel will be horrified to learn of this attack, and would ask anyone with information to come forward to the police at the earliest possible opportunity.”
Karen McKevitt, South Down MLA, has also branded the church attack as “despicable”. Commenting on the incident at the Our Lady of the Angels church in Kilkeel, she added: “People in the local community were disgusted and angry at the vandals who targeted the interior of the church.
“I have spoken to a number of the people about this disgraceful attack, and they are understandably disgusted and angry. This is wanton vandalism and I am horrified that anyone could so deliberately go out of their way to cause such damage.
“I would hope that anyone who knows is responsible for this thuggish behaviour would have the good conscience to contact police so they can catch the culprits and bring them to justice.”
