U-12’s continued their good recent form with a convincing win over Bredagh in Cherryvale. Everyone played their part in a hard working display, the practice in training finally beginning to pay dividends with some great passing and movement writes Michael Starkey. Final score: Bredagh 0-03, RGU 2-09. Afterwards the Seconds played their part in an entertaining match against a side composed mainly of Bredaghs’ First team, giving the managers plenty of options when picking the teams next week. Next match against Castlewellan on Tue night at PTR. RGU U-14’s 3-08  Dromara 2-10 RGU 14’s kicked off their 2011 Championship campaign with a hard fought victory over an extremely defiant Dromara side. The Hoops started brightly but were soon pegged back by some flowing football from the visitors. Downpatrick were guilty of a number of wides and over playing the ball in the first half and trailed by 6 points at half time.A second half revival typical of this young Hoops side brought the sides level mid way through the second half. Both sides fought hard in the last quarter of the game trading scores but in the end it was the Hoops who prevailed by the minimum of scores. In a high scoring encounter RGU U14’s suffered a 4 point defeat to St. Pauls. From the outset goals were the order of the day with both sets of forwards getting the upper hand. It was nip and tuck in the first half with RGU leading at half time by the smallest of margins. From the start of the second half St. Pauls midfield started to overrun their physically smaller RGU opponents and they immediately raced into an early second half lead. Perhaps the turning point in the game was when the referee seemingly awarded the RGU a penalty only to reverse his decision and give a wide. RGU heads visibly dropped and St.Pauls extended their lead to 6 points. A revival from the Hoops lads seemed on when they reduced the lead to 3 points, only to concede a soul destroying goal with only 5 minutes left on the clock. The Hoops again replied with 2 more points before the referee blew the final whistle for a score line of 7-08 to 8-09. This is the young Hoops first reversal of the Summer League so good performances in their next two games will place them in a good position.
