The thoughts and prayers of everyone at RGU are with the Deeny Family on the death of Mary (RIP). Mary was the grandmother of current players James, Jonathan and Clare as well as Ciaran and Cathy who also played for the RGU. Mary’s husband, Bernard, who pre-deceased her in 2000, was a real driving force in the club for many years from the 1940’s through to the 90’s serving many roles including Chairman, secretary and Manager. Their three sons, Kieran, Peter and Brian all played in the successful SFC teams of the 70’s with Peter also managing the Senior team for a while. Mary Queen of the Gael pray for her.
Well done to Peter, Damian and Conor and the Down teams after two terrific matches and wins on Sunday writes John Murphy.
Congratulations to the Red High Year 8 team who won the Ulster Colleges Corn McQuillan Cup today in Belfast. RGU’s Ronan Murphy lifted the cup and the Red High was well served by RGU with seven boys on the panel of 21. Well done to Ruairi Quinn, Ryan Sterritt, Ronan Murphy, Tim Prenter, Tony Carson, Ryan Cassidy and Ryan Wynn.
Congratulations also to the U-10s who won the Shield at the Clonduff Tournament today. Well done boys.
[caption id="attachment_39559" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Over 100 pulils from three Downpatrick primary schools took part in the RGU’s coaching session.[/caption]Over 100 boys and girls descended on PTR on Friday morning as part of the RGU’s new coaching initiative in our three feeder primary schools. P4 children from St Brigids, St Colmcille’s and Our Lady’s and St Patrick’s came down and were mixed into eight teams named after RGU Down stars of past and present and they all got plenty of football under the watchful eye of school’s coach Paddy Smyth and Senior player Anthony Doherty.
All the pupils had a great time down at the club, which was rounded of with a prize draw for RGU merchandise, McCartan Sports vouchers and goodie bags. Many thanks to all who helped make this morning a success, Anthony, Paddy, Ciaran, Donna, Brenda, John, Roisin and all the teachers and pupils from the three schools.
