Programme for Government consultation launched by the NI Executive
The Executive has today published for consultation its draft Programme for Government.
First Minister Michelle O’Neill and deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly have described the draft Programme for Government as an ambitious and realistic vision for the remainder of the mandate.
Speaking as the consultation was launched, First Minister Michelle O’Neill said: “The draft Programme for Government sets out the Executive’s priorities to tackle the biggest issues facing workers, families and communities here.
“From cutting hospital waiting times, delivering affordable childcare, to providing more affordable housing, we are taking action to ensure our communities have access to the life opportunities they deserve.
“We must invest in and improve our public services, protect our environment, create jobs and grow a sustainable economy that works for everyone.
“This is an ambitious plan which is set against the very challenging financial backdrop. But this is a mandate for delivery, and the Programme for Government gives everyone hope for a better future.
“That is why it is vital we hear your voices on the issues that are important to the public. Together, we can prioritise the issues that matter most and make this an even better place, now and for generations to come.”
Deputy First Minister, Emma Little-Pengelly said: “The draft Programme for Government outlines the Executive’s bold ambition to change the lives of our people and communities for the better.
“We want to build on Northern Ireland’s reputation as a great place to live, work and invest by supporting our homegrown businesses and local talent through education, skills and jobs creation.
“We also want to improve access to public services by investing in new ideas and technology as well as upgrading our infrastructure. By doing this, we can take care of people’s needs today while supporting their hopes and ambitions for tomorrow.
“Everyone recognises that we are working to a very tight budget in a shorter than normal mandate.
“But we can still improve lives in a meaningful way by focussing on a small number of priorities that will make a real difference.
“Over the course of the next eight weeks, we intend on engaging with as many people as possible, so they can help shape this plan and ensure we deliver on the issues which matter most.”
A public consultation begins on Monday 9 September and runs for eight weeks.

Retail NI Comments On Publication Of Draft Programme For Government
Commenting on the publication of the draft NI Executive Programme for Government, Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said: “This new draft Programme for Government needs to be more than just an agreement of the four political parties that make up the current Executive or indeed just a wish list document out for consultation.
“It needs to be a co-design with business and other key stakeholders in civic society if we are to realise and share the full potential of this region.
“In short, we want to be partners, not just consultees in the implementation of the new Programme for Government.
“ It’s not just a change of policy that is needed, but a change in how the Executive does policy.
“Our Executive and Assembly will ultimately be judged on effective delivery, how it can change the lives of working people by helping to provide more and better jobs and make our region an eco-system of innovation.
