Police Investigate Arson Attacks In Newry Area

Police investigating two incidents of arson in the south Armagh area this morning (Tuesday 17th March), have arrested two men.

Sergeant Lewis said: “Shortly after 00:40am, it was reported that three cars and one van had been set alight at the Carn View area of Newry. A house located in the area received damage to the front windows and the front glass panel of the front door during the incident. No one was inside the property, as Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service extinguished the vehicles on fire.

“At around 2:05am, it was reported that two cars parked at the Woodside Park area of Bessbrook had been set alight in the area and two more vehicles were also damaged. A number of males were seen in the area at the time of the incident. The males then left the area in a dark coloured VW Golf and were arrested a short time later.

“The two men aged 28 and 25 years old were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences in the Bessbrook area. Both men are currently assisting police with their enquiries.

“We would continue to appeal to anyone who saw anything suspicious in the areas at the time of the incident to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 56 17/03/20. Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime.”
