Local police have urged the public to get involved in an interactive speed operation across the Down area next week.
On Wednesday 20 August, local police will carry out speed checks in areas nominated by the local community on our Down PSNI Facebook page.
Explaining the initiative, Sergeant John McKenna, from Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “Road safety is of paramount importance to us and our aim is to save lives and reduce injuries.
“We carry out speed checks on a wide variety of roads in the local area but we want to know where you think we should be. From 9am to 5pm, next Wednesday, August 20th, we will carry out speed checks on the roads you tell us to go to via our Facebook page. We will then let you know how many tickets we issue and what sort of speeds we record motorists travelling at.”
Explaining the importance of raising awareness of road safety, Sergeant McKenna added: “Road safety is a local priority for police. We want to get the message out to local drivers that they need to take more care on the roads if everyone is to reach their destination, and return home safely.
“Speed is the number one cause of fatal collisions so we really need people to understand that by slowing down and altering their speed to suit the conditions of the road they can potentially save a life. As well as slowing down we need drivers, cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists to pay more attention, to respect other road users, and to take personal responsibility for their own safety. “
To take part in the initiative, simply post a suggestion on our Down PSNI Facebook page between 9am and 5pm next Wednesday 20 August.
