Obituary For Jeremy Owen Thomas Hughes (1931–2022)
A service celebrating the life of Jeremy Hughes took place last Sunday in The Courtyard, Clandeboye Estate, Bangor.
In accordance with Jeremy’s specific wishes those in attendance were asked to please wear colourful clothing and no black ties.
Jeremy had passed away at his Craigantlet home the previous Sunday. He was one of the most respected men within the local horse racing fraternity, business and farming community.
He was a Director of Downpatrick racecourse and acted as a steward at both local tracks.
An absolute gentleman in all his dealings and as a steward, he had an extensive knowledge of racing and was recognised to be ultra-fair and understanding within the stewards room.
Jeremy owned numerous winners the best of which was the high class Razor’s Edge trained by his friend Leslie Crawford and his purple colours with yellow sash were displayed at the service.
He had a vast array of interests including opera, yachting, shooting and his beloved dogs.
The service included two operatic arias and the poem, ‘The Hooves Of The Horses‘ by William Henry Ogilvie was read to the very large attendance which included representatives of the Irish Turf Club.
Condolences are offered to his wife Boo and daughters Caroline and Philippa and the large extended family circle.
