Northern Ireland Fishing Industry Celebrated In Film

A new documentary-style film, which takes a look inside the Northern Irish Seafood industry, is coming to a port near you.

From the fishermen who toil to bring home fantastic fresh seafood and the shellfish farmers who grow it; to the auctioneers, seafood processors, fishmongers and fish friers, this new film looks at the rarely-seen world of our seafood industry through interviews with those who are at its heart.

Fishers, Farmers and our Coastal Communities‘ will show the dangers of life at sea, the challenges of making ends meet in a tough economic climate and will celebrate our seafood industry and communities… always beautiful, sometimes tough and never dull.

Project Manager, Dr Lynn Gilmore of Seafish Northern Ireland said: “We hope that fishers, farmers and our coastal communities will show a wide audience something of the dynamism of our seafood industry in adapting to a changing world as well as celebrating the fantastic characters, stories and places which make up our coastal communities.

“We will look back at how things have changed over the past decades as well as looking forward to the industry of tomorrow. In producing this film and a series of twenty accompanying mini films (each focusing on a different aspect of the seafood supply chain, from catch to plate) we have worked with industry to ensure an authentic and realistic look at life for people living and working Northern Ireland’s fishing communities. Their hard work and commitment ensures we can enjoy local, sustainable and healthy seafood all year round.”

Kevin McGarry, Programme Manager of the Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) said: “The FLAG are delighted to fund Seafish to deliver this project which showcases those involved in the local fishing industry. The FLAG, which has 19 members representing local Councils, the fishing industry, the private sector, voluntary sector, education and environmental sectors, has been charged with the responsibility to deliver £2.6M of funding provided by the European Union and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development through Axis 4 of the European Fisheries Fund across the fishing dependent communities of Ardglass, Kilkeel and Portavogie.

“The aim of the fund is to support sustainable development in these areas through a wide range of initiatives. These films, developed through this Seafish- led project, are important in promoting the work of the FLAG and celebrating the people and businesses of our fishing dependent communities.

“We hope that Fishers, Farmers and our Coastal Communities will be an interesting visual record and testament to how these communities have developed and evolved to enable them to continue this way of life.

Fishers, Farmers and our Coastal Communities‘ and the accompanying mini films will be made available on the Seafish YouTube channel on completion of the project,” added Lynn Gilmore.
