NMD Council To Spend Pennies On Newcastle Toilets

Summer Opening Hours for Newcastle Public Toilets as Major Works Get Underway

A major public toilet overhaul is underway in Newcastle as Newry Mourne and Down District Council is moving forward on a £440,000 major works to the Public Toilets in Newcastle town centre.

The planned works are being delivered as part of the Council’s Public Convenience Strategy and aim to enhance the quality and accessibility of public amenities for both locals and visitors alike.

This significant investment will bring the facilities up to modern standards and the programme of works is scheduled for completion by September, ahead of the prestigious 2024 Amgen Irish Open at the Royal County Down Golf Club.

Newry Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Pete Byrne said: “The major upgrades at three of Newcastle’s Public Toilet facilities is very much welcomed, particularly the new Changing Places Toilet facility at Downs Road.

“This addition will significantly benefit people with a range of disabilities and their carers, enabling them to go out in public with greater ease and peace of mind, free from fear or stress.”

The upgrade of the Council facilities will see the toilet block at Central Promenade being completely replaced with two Unisex Toilets and one Disabled Toilet, whilst the Donard Park toilet block will be transformed to include four Unisex Toilets and one Disabled Toilet, ensuring enhanced convenience and accessibility for all visitors.

The present South Promenade toilet block will be upgraded to a disabled toilet and two unisex toilets.

The toilet block at Downs Road will also be refurbished, and a new fully accessible Changing Places Toilet facility for the seaside town will be installed at the Downs Road site.

The Council has worked closely with the Mae Murray Foundation on these plans to ensure the facilities are accessible and inclusive for everyone.

The Mae Murray Foundation is dedicated to breaking down unnecessary barriers, enabling people of all ages and abilities to participate equally in society.

The existing toilet block at Down Road in Newcastle will be refurbished and a Changing Places Facility will be added.

While essential works is underway at these three toilet blocks, they are not currently suitable for use. During this period, visitors can still make use of the public toilets at Castle Park, Island Park, and South Promenade, which will remain open.

To ensure everyone easily finds their way, directional signage will be in place at the temporarily closed locations, guiding locals, and visitors to the nearest open facilities.
