Water for Health was the topic of the day at Drumlins Integrated when NI Water’s Education Team recently paid a visit.
The children were introduced to H20, a water drop figure and mascot for the programme. They also took part in practical demonstrations to explain how much water children should drink each day and how much of the body is made up of water. After discussing both tap and bottled water, pupils took part in a taste test to see if they could tell the difference. Each pupil received a re-usable NI Water bottle.
NI Water’s Environmental Education Manager, Jane Jackson said: “We had a really busy year in 2013/14, visiting over 150 schools across the country and educating over 10,000 pupils. We had lots of fun teaching the children about water and how much to drink every day.

“The classroom visits are really popular with schools and last year we spoke to nearly 3,000 pupils about the importance of drinking water, conserving water and what not to flush down the loo.
“We are delighted with the positive feedback we have received from schools who have participated in our education programme. It’s a fantastic way for us to work within the local community and educate future generations of water users!”
Pupils from across 150 schools last year, listened to our educators talk about how to save water; how much water to drink; what not to flush down the loo; water conservation and some even had the chance to see a working sewage works! That’s without mentioning the chance to become a nature detective for a tour around the scenic Silent Valley Reservoir and becoming a passenger on our travelling classroom, the Waterbus!
The programme is aimed at Key Stage 2 and designed to complement a key element of the Northern Ireland Primary Curriculum – the ‘World Around Us’.
