Newry Sports Centre Sportability Summer Scheme Gets Up And Running
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council’s Sportability Committee has teamed up with the charity ‘Making a Change’ (MAC) to bring a new course for children with additional needs.
Children who are unable to ride a bike, attended the new event ‘Balancability’ at the Newry Sports Centre. The event was designed to them to progress and overcome various challenges they may face when cycling.
The Sports Centre proved to be suitable venue for this venture as the wide open space was ideal for the children to learn. MAC staff contributed greatly to the activities and they were just as delighted as the children when they took off on their bikes.
Newry, Mourne and Down District Council Chairperson, Councillor Gillian Fitzpatrick said, “Children take things like riding their bike for granted but when you add in a special need like Asperger Syndrome it can be a very difficult task. I am delighted that Newry Mourne and Down District Council played a part in this amazing opportunity for children in our area”.
Councillor Fitzpatrick added: “I hope that in the future the Council can bring many more courses like this as they help fulfil the Council’s ethos in getting all members in our community active and healthy.”
